What is ‘supported living’?

About This service

At Genesis Housing, we believe that individuals with disabilities should have the freedom to choose where, how, and with whom they live, as well as who provides the support they need to thrive.

Supported living allows for a separation between housing and care, creating personalized solutions for each tenant. We source and secure high-quality homes, while care provider organizations offer the appropriate social, domiciliary, or floating support based on individual needs.

Our tenants enjoy the security of tenure, with the same rights and responsibilities as any other renter. Supported living arrangements allow social services and health funding, subject to fairer charging procedures, to cover the necessary care and support. Additionally, the welfare benefits system can assist with housing costs and everyday living expenses.

Supported living options can look different for each person. For example, tenants may:

  • Rent a home through an assured or assured shorthold tenancy, either individually or as part of a joint tenancy, in shared or self-contained accommodation.
  • Live in a property they own, either outright or through shared ownership.

In terms of support, tenants may:

  • Have all their care and support costs covered.
  • Use a combination of paid support and informal, “natural” support from family, friends, or community resources.
  • Rely solely on informal support, without paid care.
  • Set up their own supported living arrangement by designing and planning their housing and support needs.
  • Move into an existing service where supported living accommodation with a vacancy is available.
What is supported housing?

Supported housing exists to help individuals with support needs live healthy, fulfilling lives in their own homes and communities. These services vary widely, but they all share the common goal of providing a safe, secure environment where people can live independently with the necessary support.

Supported housing plays a vital role in:

  • Helping older adults maintain their independence by offering the support they need to live safely and comfortably.
  • Providing refuge and assistance for victims of domestic violence, offering them a secure space to stabilize their lives and access other essential services.
  • Assisting homeless individuals with complex needs in transitioning from life on the streets to stable housing, education, training, or employment opportunities.
  • Supporting individuals with mental health needs in stabilizing their lives, recovering, and achieving greater independence.
  • Helping ex-servicemen and women find stable housing and providing additional support for those dealing with mental health challenges or physical disabilities.
  • Empowering people with learning disabilities to maximize their independence and have greater control over their lives in the long term.
